If you're seeking an unforgettable culinary journey through the vibrant flavors of Burma, look no further than New Burma, located in the heart of San Francisco's design district at 659 Townsend St. This charming Burmese restaurant invites you to dive into a world bursting with spices, textures, and rich aromas that will leave your taste buds singing.

The moment you step inside New Burma, you'll notice the cozy yet welcoming atmosphere, though it might be a bit compact. The ambiance is warm, with the delightful scent of spices wafting from the kitchen, creating an inviting backdrop for your dining experience. While some diners have mentioned the occasional overwhelming aroma, the rich tapestry of Burmese cuisine more than makes up for it.

Indulge in their popular Burmese Pork Curry with Potatoes, a hearty dish boasting tender chunks of pork simmered in a robust Burmese curry, complemented by perfectly cooked dice of potatoes and a tangy touch of pickled mango for just $17.50. For something lighter yet equally flavorful, don't miss the Samusa Soup, a vibrant vegetarian medley that combines samosas, lentils, and jalapeños in a deliciously comforting broth for just $12.00.

Those craving a bit of comfort can warm up with the Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup (Ohn No Kawt Swe), an aromatic delight featuring coconut chicken curry and egg noodles, topped with fresh cilantro and served with lemon and chili power on the side for only $14.00. Each dish reflects the passion that the chefs pour into their craft, promising not just a meal but a cherished memory.

The beverage selection includes the uniquely delightful Burmese Ice Milk Tea—a creamy treat that pairs beautifully with any dish, priced at $5.00. Or, keep it simple with a classic soda option, fully refreshing and priced at $2.00.

Customer experiences resonate with praise for New Burma. Many diners, such as Larimie Garcia (Xhico), rave about their meals, highlighting the Tea Leaf Salad and the Samusa as must-try items. Heidi Jolynne Garrett notes that the tea salad rivals even well-known competitors, and the friendly staff enhance the welcoming vibe. There's a clear consensus among patrons about the affordability and quality of delicious dishes offered at this hidden gem.

So, whether you're dining in or planning to take out, make your way to New Burma for a culinary experience that's delightful, satisfying, and bursting with Burmese flavor. Don’t forget to call ahead during busy times to secure your spot!

We went here for dinner. The place it self was small and nice but the kitchen could be more isolated from the eating area. A few times while dining we got hit with a wave of scents from the kitchen that were a bit overwhelming. As for the food it was good. The only thing I didn't like was that the potatoes were very undercooked in the chicken and potato curry dish.

Such a tasty treat! We went for dinner and had the Samusa, Tea Leaf Salad, and some veggies. Everything was so delicious. The server was very friendly. The restaurant was very clean and welcoming. Definitely will go back. It’s also affordable.

The tea salad here was incredible! It is just as good if not better than Burma superstar. We also really enjoyed the coconut rice and the mango chicken. I highly recommend going here! Do note there isn’t a ton of seating so if it’s a weekend & you want to eat there, I’d definitely call ahead for reservations. Otherwise, they do take out as well.

tldr; this place is better than Berma Love. It may look like just another lunch place in the design district, but it's really a hidden gem. The food is delicious. The flavors are subtle and complex. If you are in the neighborhood, give them a try!! Edit: came back and had the garlic eggplant, coconut rice, and platha with coconut chicken dip. Everything was delicious, but the coconut dip was divine!!! It's like a party in my mouth. An absolute must have.

Tasty Burmese food. The place was empty and we ate in, but seems like a lot of people order takeout. I would def return

We got it delivered so we can't speak to the atmosphere. The food was fresh and good quality. Overall I felt I would definitely try more items on the menu before making a final judgment. We got tea leaf salad and fiery tofu stir fry. Both felt good to eat but ultimately lacked some excitement in spices. The coconut rice was pretty good too easy to eat plain which is a good thing. My takeaway would be that it gets the job done but doesn't compete with some of the other Burmese food locally. It's worth a try to see if it hits the spot for you!

My friend recommended this place and I went to try it with my husband on Friday night. We ordered chili beef, tea leaf salad, orange chicken and all good and the tea leaf salad was really good. I will definitely go back and try other dishes there.

A lovely welcome to the neighborhood! Friendly staff and delicious food with options for veggie, seafood, and meat lovers! We tried the tea leaf salad with cabbage, samusas, chili beef, and the fiery vegetables w/ chicken (entree sizes). Great flavors with adjustable heat upon request. Looking forward to visiting again to try the garlic noodles and Burma Grub special garlic shrimp! Yum!
